Discovery Channel is preparing to launch the feature-length documentary Everest’s Greatest Mystery under its newly launched ‘Undiscovered’ strand.

Produced by Sherman Oaks-based MAK Pictures, the documentary will document a team of expert mountaineers as they endeavor to solve the mystery of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, two explorers who vanished on their journey to summit Mount Everest in 1924.

In 1999, Mallory’s preserved body was discovered by a group of researchers on the north face of the mountain, fueling speculation that the two explorers were indeed the first to successfully summit Earth’s highest mountain before succumbing to the frost. Irvine’s final resting place, however, has never been found.

Everest’s Greatest Mystery will track a team of expert explorers and climbers, led by Jake Norton – one of the climbers who discovered Mallory’s remains – as they journey to the top of Everest to investigate the scene of the tragedy in the hopes of unearthing Irvine’s body, along with the expedition’s famed Kodak camera.

The film will utilize satellite images as a search guide to piece together the clues and evidence that could lead to Irvine and his camera. If found, the developed film from their trek could have the potential to change history.

Everest’s Greatest Mystery will mark the second documentary to air under Discovery Channel’s newly launched ‘Undiscovered’ documentary strand, which explores some of the world’s greatest mysteries, when it broadcasts on Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

MAK Pictures’ Mark Kadin, Will Ehbrecht and Andy Robertson serve as executive producers. Discovery Channel’s Howard Swartz is exec producer, and Joe Mazzeo is associate producer.

In addition, Discovery will also broadcast To Live or Die on Everest, which spotlights the events that led to one of the most-deadly climbing seasons ever on Everest in the spring of 2019.

MAK Pictures produces, with Kadin, Ehbrecht, Robertson and Anuj Majumdar are EPs alongside Discovery’s Swartz.

To Live or Die on Everest debuts Oct. 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
