ABC News has unveiled a new production arm for premium, narrative non-fiction content with ABC News Studios, which launched on Tuesday (July 26) with a slate of three feature documentaries and 15 series and specials that are already in production, including titles from noted filmmakers like Dawn Porter, Irene Taylor, Ron Howard and Stanley Nelson.

The goal of the new venture is to produce original content in genres ranging from investigations and news-adjacent stories to true crime and pop culture. At launch, ABC News Studios said it will deliver more than 100 hours of programming across ABC, Hulu, Disney+ and National Geographic this year.

“ABC News Studios is a testament to our strategic investment in and commitment to meet the audience’s demand for bold storytelling and straightforward journalism whenever, wherever and on whatever device,” said ABC News president Kim Godwin said. “I’m excited to leverage the power and integrity of the number-one news network in America to create premium and distinctive content for all communities.”

The new studio will be overseen by Reena Mehta, ABC News senior vice president of streaming and digital content, and Mike Kelley, who has been appointed vice president and lead of ABC News Studios with a remit to guide its creative and business direction. Mehta has previously worked with HBO Max and Nickelodeon, while Kelley has worked on global partnerships and distribution for ITV Studios and strategy and programming for PBS.

Also on the team at the studios’ launch is David Sloan, who will work as senior executive producer and creative lead, and Jacqueline Glover, Onyx Collective’s head of documentary, who oversaw the initial feature documentary slate for ABC News Films.

“We’re laser-focused on ABC News Studios contributing premier non-fiction content to linear and streaming subscriber growth and engagement for ABC and the Disney company at large,” said Mehta. “Our wide range of captivating original programming draws on the legacy of ABC News with best-in-class storytelling.”

Kelley added: “We plan to premiere at least one new title from ABC News Studios each month only on Hulu, and continue to launch hits on the network. I’m energized by the creativity from the teams inside ABC News and our third-party production partners to build out further an expansive content pipeline.”

The official launch on Tuesday follows a soft launch that began last year, with successful projects across ABC and Hulu including the documentary films Aftershock, Jacinta and Leave No Trace; the series City of Angels | City of Death, The Fatal Flaw: A Special Edition of 20/20, Keeper of the Ashes: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders, Let the World See, Mormon No More and Wild Crime; and specials like The Housewife and the Hustler, The Ivana Trump Story: The First Wife, The Kardashians and Truth and Lies: The Last Gangster.

The three upcoming documentaries from ABC News Studios that are in production or preparing to launch are:

The Lady Bird Diaries (w/t, Hulu): a film from Dawn Porter, Trilogy Films and Industrial Media, partly based on the ABC News podcast In Plain Sight: Lady Bird Johnson, that tells the story of the former First Lady using her own White House tapes.

Untitled Iwájú Documentary (Disney+): a feature about the first-of-its-kind collaboration between pan-African comic book company Kugali and the Walt Disney Animation Studios as they create the animated series Iwájú. The documentary is from the team behind the Disney+ series Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2.

Sound of the Police (Hulu): directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson, this doc digs into the history of police brutality and misconduct in U.S. Black communities.

The new docuseries from ABC News Studios that are either in production or preparing to launch are:

The Age of Influence (Hulu): a six-part series about influencer culture, using firsthand accounts of some of the biggest social media stories.

Cinderella (ABC): a news special dedicated to the legacy of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. This version of the story embraced racial diversity in casting, and starred Brandy Norwood as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother. The special reflects on how the idea of a princess has evolved, and what makes the film still relevant today.

Death in the Dorms (Hulu): stories of U.S. college students’ lives cut short through foul play, with each procedural episode examining a different case.

Demons and Saviors (Hulu): a three-part limited true-crime series detailing the fascination around Christina Boyer, her fame as a teenager, and the alleged murder of her own infant daughter in her early twenties, a crime she maintains she did not commit. The series follows a band of amateur sleuths obsessed with setting her free.

Grails (Hulu): a series that goes behind the scenes of the $60 billion sneaker industry with entrepreneurs Earl Cooper and Olajuwon Ajanaku, two Morehouse College golf champion graduates who created the lifestyle brand Eastside Golf to promote diversity and authenticity on the golf course. Now, they’re collaborating with the Jordan brand to design a series of sneakers and streetwear apparel for the golf industry.

IMPACT x Nightline (Hulu): a weekly newsmagazine series that will include hard-hitting investigative reports, deep dives on news stories, profiles of newsmakers and celebrity interviews.

Murder U (w/t, Hulu): investigative psychologist and ex-FBI profiler Bryanna Fox and her class of criminal mindhunters examine cases of convicted serial murderers wherein unanswered questions remain about why the killers did what they did, how they selected their victims, and if there are other victims who have not been identified.

The Murders Before the Marathon (Hulu): this three-part series directed by Jesse Sweet and executive produced by Story Syndicate follows journalist Susan Zalkind as she investigates the triple murder that took her friend’s life in conjunction with the Boston Marathon bombing that shook her city. Connecting the two events, the series seeks to answer the question of whether the bombing could have been prevented if the murders had been solved.

Superstar (ABC): a series from the producers of 20/20 and Truth and Lies featuring rare footage and intimate details about mavericks who shaped U.S. culture.

Untitled George Stephanopoulos Project (Hulu): a political docuseries chronicling the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.

Untitled Scott Johnson Project (Hulu): In 1988, the body of Scott Johnson, a 27-year-old gay American doctoral student, was found sprawled below a cliff on a rugged beach in Sydney, Australia. This new multipart series delves into what really happened to Scott and explores the dark history of homophobia in Sydney.

Web of Death (Hulu): web sleuths crack the most uncrackable murder cases in the U.S. using the internet and social media.

The studio’s upcoming slate also includes second seasons of The Con and Wild Crime, as well as the newest season of the National Geographic series Explorer.
