Two unscripted hits took top honors for reality programming at the annual Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards over the weekend.

HBO Max’s Legendary (pictured, produced by Scout Productions) and CBS’ The Amazing Race (from Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri’s Earthview Inc. and Jerry Bruckheimer Television) tied for outstanding achievement in reality programming at this year’s awards, which were held virtually out of concern for the current rise in COVID-19 cases in California. The TCA’s summer tour was originally intended to be held in-person from July 27 to August 13, but was moved to virtual just prior to its kick-off due to the surge in cases.

The Beatles: Get Back, the archive-led doc from Peter Jackson for Disney+, won the award for outstanding achievement in news and information.

“Tonight was supposed to be our first time celebrating the TCA Awards in-person since 2019 — unfortunately, it was not meant to be,” Melanie McFarland, TCA president and TV critic for Salon, said in a statement. “Despite this development, we are proud to announce this year’s roster of talented TCA Award winners. Each of them played a vital role in making the 2021-2022 television season one of the best in recent memory. We sincerely congratulate all of our honorees, and we look forward to gathering in person once again in 2023.”

The winners were selected by the TCA’s membership of more than 200 TV journalists from across the United States and Canada.
